Marijuana or Weed - Oh My Buhay

It’s disheartening and worrisome to note that cannabis, otherwise known as marijuana a.k.a. street name WEED has been legalized in almost all states in America.

It’s a billion dollar industry and many American’s have become instant entrepreneurs. They are now proud dealers of flavored marijuana. Meron pang lavander infused, lemon grass, ginger, etc. Last year I saw inn the news that a woman who was struggling became instant businesswoman by selling thousands of marijuana leaves every day. She converted her kitchen into a store. Users drive and pick up the leaves from her house. She said she earned $7,000 a month. In a few months, the demand grew and she took in her friend as investor.

There’s a huge house that was recently sold steps away from my sister’s house. We didn’t even know that the former owners where raided. The police found the second floor full of marijuana plants. Apparently they were growing plants inside their house.

It scares me to think that millions of American’s would be driving BUZZED or under the influence of this medicinal “kuno” plants. Americans already have a serious problem controlling drunken driving, sleepy driving, reckless driving, and yet they created another problem BUZZ driving, which is definitely another road hazard.

Walk along the streets of Manhattan and in a few minutes tila ma-ha-high na rin ako.

While standing for one and a half hours at a street corner waiting for the New Year countdown with 350,000 people, I kept smelling weed. I couldn’t pinpoint where it was coming from only to realize the smell was from at least 4 people standing around me.

While waiting for bus ride, train ride, the smell of good old marijuana permeates the air. Highhhh na ako.

Walking under the influence looking like a zombie is becoming common. I’ve seen men walk past me looking stoned. I know one when I see one. When I was in college, usung-uso yan sa Binangonan and in the university belt. Puro high and sabog ang mga lalaki. Kabisado ko ang mga mukha, salita at galaw nila. Ilan beses nga nahimatay ang mama ko nung nalaman na ang idine-date ko daw ay loyal customer ni Aling Juana.

There’s a congressman who has started his crusade for the legalization of marijuana in the Philippines. Would the number of people benefiting from it far outweigh the dangers it pauses to the society? As if dealing with the insurmountable drug addiction is not enough, some lawmakers would like to add another serious problem to our society which I am sure they would not know how to deal with when it gets more serious. So paano, pag nangyari yun? How do we solve it? Patayin lahat ng marijuana users?

Yes, marijuana could be medicinal. Yes it could make our pains more bearable lalo na pag high tayo. Yes, t could elevate our happiness into ecstasy.

But no, thanks, but no. Prevention is better than cure.
