Racial Discrimination at Gerloczy Cafe - Oh My Buhay

Racial Discrimination at Gerloczy Cafe

April 28, 2015 Tuesday  (super delayed post) Budapest
From the Sisi Palace in Godollo, our shuttle bus drove us back to Budapest. I was asleep the entire one hour travel.

We were dropped off at a corner street, then we walked for one short block to this quaint building  bordered by two narrow streets.

This tour style made me feel lazy because we walked slow.   And since there was no detailed printed itinerary  I didn’t know where we would go next.

Well, we reached a  restaurant,  it’s noon time,  so this must be lunch.

The building is lovely.  Parang lalabas si Aling Juliet.

Gerloczy Cafe.  According to their  press release,  this is the favorite meeting place  of Budapesters.    That’s how they’re called pala,  Budapesters.  Parang hindi maganda kasi  because of the word pest, pester.  Why not Budapestians, or Budapenisian or  Budapenese.  Ay wag yan.

The tables were so tiny, fit for slim Parisians.

Cheers. The waiter counted wrong and served one extra glass of lemonade to the other table. In a gesture of goodwill, to save the waiter from being scolded because he didn’t get the beverage orders accurately, Ayleen volunteered to get  the glass of lemonade instead.

My daughter asked the waiter which one tasted better.  The____  or ____?  He answered with sarcasm “What do you think?”  Nagpanting ang tenga ko.  I looked up, I was going to tell him he’s both rude and sarcastic,  I saw his face smiling, looking at Beth Villamil at the other table.  I calmed down and gave him the benefit of the doubt.  Baka kako he had no intention naman to be sarcastic.   Little did I know that he was also rude and sarcastic to the others.   To all of us.   In fact,   Susan Dimacali requested the manager to send them a different waiter.  That did not end there.

The waiter was very smart.  He couldn’t contain his rudeness and bias against us,  but he tried to camouflage his bad behavior by pretending to be friendly by putting on  a fake smile.    Then he would say some sarcasm then smile.  The restaurant manager did not apologize for his staff’s rudeness.  They treated our group shabbily.  Obviously a clear case of racial discrimination.  They probably thought Asian’s were inferior.  Or maybe they found out beforehand that we’re from the Philippines.  Maybe that’s most likely it.

Gerloczy Cafe was supposedly Trip Advisor Winner in 2013,  Traveller’ Choice as one of the best restaurants in Budapest.

Yes they may have a good ambience,  good food,  reasonable price,  but if the waiter is rude and they are discriminatory against Asians or specifically to Filipinos,  how can we consider them BEST restaurant.  How can you reward them for bad behavior?   Or maybe their award is as fake as their smile.
