What Triggers My Migraine

Although I still get migraine attacks, I noticed that they have become fewer and less intense. Or maybe I have learned how to arrest them at the onset.

I never leave home without either one of these– Vicks vaporub- cream or ointment, Katinko, Gaga peppermint rub, and other similar minty concoctions or oil or mentholated cream.

I also have a mini medicine cabinet in my bag, Biogesic, Ponstan SF both 500 mg and 250 mg. , Bonamine tablets. I cannot be out without all of these medicines.
They are my lifeline so to speak. I could be stuck in the middle of heavy traffic, tapos bigla akong mag miraine. If I don’t have a minty rub and a migraine tablet, wala na, patay na.

What triggers my migraine attacks are so far:

1. Heat and Humidity
2. Stale air
3. Glare from all kinds of sources—- sun, disco lights, strobe lights, etc.
4. When I am feeling anxious or nervous.
5. When I am uncomfortable.
6. When I lay down, get up, lay down again, turn here, there, like when I visit a doctor for check-up or undergo medical check ups like ultrasound.
7. Certain drinks but not always. Example: after drinking orange juice or citrus in the morning before or during breakfast. I could drink them at night and not have migraine.
8. Certain foods but not always. Examaple saging na saba and atis when I eat them with an empty stomach.
9. Indigestion.
10. After I cried.
11. When I was in my 20s to early 40s— on my first and second day of monthly period.
12. When I get tired and exhausted. The migraine is not immediate but onset would be after a few hours.
13. Smell of fumes, chemicals most especially paint.
14. Smell of certain perfumes. Edmund used to have a bottle of perfume that triggered my migraine. One night, Edmund, Oyen and I were riding on the same car to a dinner at a hotel in Makati sponsored by an American university. Before we could even reach Makati, I was already suffering from a very intensed attack. It destroyed my mood and my night. That university accepted my daughter but she decided to enroll at Fordham University instead.

Thank you to Pam for your concern. To Alvin for giving me a GAGA peppermint rub which started my love affair with that product, and to Bessie for giving me the Olbas oil.

  1. ha ha ha ha I can relate! I have vicks vaporub, vicks inhaler at menthol balm in my purse. Pinakafavorite ko menthol balm. Pero sa house mas madami. They are actually my security blanket.

  3. hello Ms Annie 🙂 i can relate with u coz i also have the following items in my other bag, which my kids teasingly call my SURVIVAL KIT — a medicine box complete with anti-hypertensive and palpitation meds, my antibiotics, my cough and cold meds, bioflu, pain relievers, imodium, katinko, vicks vaporub, bottled water, and a small container of candies (in case i feel dizzy or anxious especially when there’s heavy traffic while we’re on the road) … 😀

i guess when u have been through what i have been through in terms of the number of surgeries i’ve had on my colon and intestines, u might bring the same things too 😉

ang hirap na talaga pag tumatanda ako.. 🙂 para na daw akong walking pharmacy 🙂

but then again, i only use the stuff on my bag WHEN THE NEED ARISES.. 🙂 hence the name SURVIVAL KIT 😉

i hope ur migraines will lessen in the next few days, Ms Annie.. 🙂 take care and pls stay healthy and safe always.. 🙂

    God bless u and the family… <3

  4. Hello Ms Annie! Me too have migraine. I had it checked and the doctor told me I have “Migraine with Aura” because I know what triggers my migraine hehe. The doctor advised me na iwasan ang mga stress sa buhay. I told her I can’t because it’s part of my job. Hahaha. Good thing she gave me med na tumatalab for me. Before, I take Biogesic, Alaxan, Saridon, etc, kinalaunan, no effect na for me. Now, I have Celecoxib. It works a few minutes after ko po mag-take. Exercise, diet and good lifestyle will lessen the stress. Of course, not all people could live that way. Tama na yung once in a while, lalayuan mo ang mga stress sa buhay 🙂
