Lesson on Bad Behavior

I found it funny when my professor used as an example of bad behavior, car dealer customers who like to complain. No one knew in my class that we are a car dealer.
My professor said don’t give customers freebies because when you do, you give in to their complaints.

Most dealers give the customer a little concession to keep the customer happy and for continuity of business relationship but my professor said it’s not always good to give in. Giving in to an unreasonable customer is rewarding bad behavior.

He also used as an example, President Nixon. Nixon had an Irish setter puppy given to him in 1969 by his staff members as a birthday gift. He named the puppy King Timahoe, after a hamlet in Country Kildare, Ireland, where his ancestors were from.

The President enjoyed watching the dogs play. The story went that one time there was a meeting being held at the White House but the president looked distracted by his dog King Timahoe, nicknamed Tim. Tim was chewing on the expensive carpet. And the president, in his effort to stop Tim from doing so, called Tim and gave him treats. Then the dog went back to the carpet and started chewing again. Then the president called Tim back, gave him a treat, then Tim went back to the carpet and chewed again. One of the president’s guests, who were close to him, told him with all due respect, Mr. President, you are rewarding Tim for his bad behavior.
