Our first stop is in Thira at the Aeolos Taverna. The restaurant is at the topmost part of a rocky mountain overlooking the caldera.
Three thousand six hundred years ago, Santorini was a single island with a massive two (2) kilometer-wide volcano. During the great eruption, the central part of the island collapsed and submerged it under what we see, the blue sea. A tsunami of 250 meters high engulfed the island forming the caldera and the now half-moon shaped Thira, the main part of the island.
The volcano remained active giving birth to two central islands we can see from here, The Palea (old) Kameni in 46-47 A.D. and the Nea (new) Kameni in 1707-1711 A.D.
It is believed that the Lost Atlantis is submersed in the Caldera’s waters covered with volcanic lava.
We crossed the dangerous road to take photos of the sweeping view. I say dangerous because it’s narrow, has no sidewalk, beside a cliff, and big tourist buses navigate here.
Let’s see what Aeolos Tavern has.
Big pot embedded on the outer wall and lighted at night.
The use of the letters WC as water closet abbreviation is more common in Europe.
Have you seen a salad model? Me.
Eat fresh green salad every day even if you are not fond of salad. After a few days, you will begin to crave for it. It would now become your staple food, only while you’re in Greece.
Maybe I should enroll in a photography class to learn to take more attractive shots.
We were served a plate of four big meatballs with tomatoes each. I could only finish two. I was giving the other two balls to my husband but he said he already has.
Our dessert was plain yogurt with sweetened orange. I asked for two more slices of the orange. It gave the yogurt some life.
The family that owns Aeolos Tavern also conducts cooking classes at this location for small groups. They opened this restaurant twenty years ago and has since become a consistent favorite among tour operators to bring their tourist guests. And I understand why. It has a breathtaking view of the caldera, it is family owned and operated which is felt in the way they prepared and served the food. It makes one feel at home. Good choice.
