As in all Uber rides, the app introduces you to the driver and vice versa. You already know each other’s name beforehand.
Annie? Archie?
The usual exchange of pleasantries are do you live around here? From where are you? Do you like Vegas? It’s hot here. I am from Boston. My family moved here. Too many constructions. It’s slow today, etc.
By the time I get off the car, I already know bits and pieces of their own buhay.
I’ve met several Filipinos with controlling wives but they love them still. I’ve met a white female driver trying her damn best to have a baby lest her husband might leave her. I’ve met an old white puti who has a Filipina wife from Sorsogon he met thru a mail order bride site. She bosses him around he says. I’ve met an Indian driver who thinks Filipino food is great especially the lumpia. I’ve met a 36 year old puti who drives after work from 4 pm –
11 pm and who insisted that I was only in my 40s. Well, I didn’t feel kilig because it was nighttime and dark. I’ve met a Chinese guy driving a new Mercedes Benz E class not to earn money but he says he’s bored with his life.
I’ve met a white puti woman who has a shiny red Ford Escape who complimented my skin and my earrings.
I got so excited when I met a strip club dancer a few days ago. I thought I could get some inspiration because long long time ago before my kids were born, I wanted to strip tease in front of Edmund but when he realized what my plan was, he felt awkward. Before I could lift my daster up, he threw up. That was the end of my fantasy.
Today I had the pleasure of meeting a French guy who studied in London, lived in Hongkong, Singapore, Japan, the US, etc. He lived in many parts of the world because his dad was a bank trouble-shooter. He has a British accent. He sounded more British than French. His English was very good too. He told me he is divorced from his American wife. Why? They just woke up not happy anymore and wanted to go in separate directions. He said he outgrew her. Her mind is limited. She doesn’t wash the dishes, clean the house, etc. He said tasks that should come naturally like making sure that our surroundings are clean. He said their parting was more of cultural differences. She has an American boyfriend now and is extremely happy.
I rode an Uber two days ago for a distance of 12 miles which took about 15 minutes without any traffic. It was a smaller sedan and a little old. The driver’s head was almost reaching the ceiling of the car.
He told me he is a professional boxer. I couldn’t believe what I just heard. I had to ask to make sure. You are a professional boxer? Really?
He just turned pro and hasn’t won a fight yet. His debut fight is forthcoming this October. “I want to watch, I will bring my husband and my sister, and my…”. He said it will not be in Las Vegas but in Mexico City. He is fighting against a much younger guy in his mid 20s who had won 6 fights to his name. Archie is the underdog.
I told him he should not drive the Uber and instead focus on his training. He said he trains twice a day, 6-8 am and 5-8 pm. He drives the Uber in between. Ah ah, that’s pushing it too much. He said the training is very intense and he would ask his manager if he could only train once a day from 5-8 pm.
We talked about the staggering amounts McGregor and Mayweather earned from their recent circus. According to him, McGregot got US$105,000,000 while Floyd Mayweather was paid $200,000,000 just for fighting plus $120,000,000 share in ticket sales and cable streaming. I felt so bad for Archie when he told me he’s getting $1,000 for each round and a bonus of $2,000 if he wins. The fight is only 4 rounds. If he gets knocked down in the second round, he only gets $2,000 minus manager’s fees, trainor fees, expenses, etc. Wala ng natira.
Archie is just starting his professional boxing career at the age of 36 when most athletes at this age retire. He hopes Red Bull sponsors him. It’s a good marketing pitch according to him. When most athletes retire at 36, he is just starting that means he is very strong for his age. Well, first, he’s got to win his first fight. Otherwise, the boxing promoters might shun away from him.
I wish him the very best of luck.
