Asked for her hand in marriage - Oh My Buhay

Asked for her hand in marriage

Proposal background

On March 30, 2019, my daughter’s boyfriend sent me a message, inviting me and Edmund to dinner in EDSA Shangrila Hotel, formerly EDSA Plaza Hotel. I knew already what it was about. He has never invited us for a lunch or dinner out so this would be the first time, and this must be the day that he would ask for my daughter’s hand in marriage.

In the afternoon of March 31, 2019, before getting ready to go to Edsa Shangrila, I asked Edmund, half-seriously, no, seriously, “Am I allowed to say no?” my husband laughed. Of course not, I am not allowed to say no. My daughter is of age and they’ve been dating for 5 years (I think). Derrick is a good person and comes from a good family. I also want my daughter to have a companion. Edmund and I won’t be around forever and I don’t want my girl to be alone. I want her to have someone by her side, someone who can be her true partner in life.

Edmund and I met with Derrick at the Japanese restaurant on the second floor of the hotel. He was there already when we arrived.

After hi hello and a short kwentuhan, Edmund asked or said something, I don’t remember his exact words but he sort of gave Derrick an opening. Derrick started his spiel. He must have practiced and memorized the four sentences or phrases he unleashed. He said he is asking for Juls’s hand in marriage. That he is ready na. If I remember it accurately he said “Dati hindi pa stable, ngayon medyo okay, stable na”. I asked when he intends to propose because Oyen is in the US. He said when my daughter arrives daw from the US. That was the time when I was flying to Zurich to meet with Oyen.

Edmund asked Derrick kung ready na sya or handa na sya. He quickly answered “yes tito”.

We continued eating and didn’t talk much about the details except for the estimated date they want to get married. He said next year, March or April. He also mentioned that Juls said she wants to get married in the US first.

It was a quick dinner and meeting. What else can we say except to give our blessings and congratulations.
