Batik shopping at Caribelle inside the 400 year old Romney Manor Estate

Today, we went on a 30-minute drive through town.

I was excited to watch an introduction to batik making. However, I didn’t quite understand what she was saying because it was really short. There was no actual demonstration of how to make batik.

Caribelle Batik started batik making in 1976 inside the 400 year-old Romney Manor, originally the home of Kalinago Chief Tegraman who offered food and shelter to Thomas Warner and his contingents in 1623. They were the first British settlers on the island which is known as the mother colony of the West Indies. According to their history, a few years later, Thomas Warner together with the French army killed Chief Tegraman and 2,000 other people. The land owned by Chief Tegraman was occupied and granted to the childhood friend of Thomas Warner named Sam Jefferson II, who was the great great great grandfather of Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd president of the United States.

I bought a big scarf and a wall painting for souvenir. A Nigerian who was with us told me it’s cheaper to get these items in Nigeria. A scarf here is $50 there it’s $5. Let’s go to Nigeria!
