Colon Cancer - Oh My Buhay

My father died of colon cancer 5 days before his 80th birthday.  He never had colonoscopy.  My brother looked for alternative healing methods like mega doses of vitamins but to no avail.

My “bilas” is currently undergoing treatments for colon cancer.  She’s 52.  She was having trouble moving her bowels and always had tummy ache.  She thought it was only due to indigestion.  Last September, she and husband, together with a group of friends traveled to Europe.  The day before their flight,  my bilas went to the doctor due to tummy discomfort.   After taking antacids,  she felt better and proceeded with her 3 week holiday.

When she came back,  she had a routine check-up.  The ultrasound showed some mass in her colon.  For more thorough diagnosis,  she had MRI which confirmed that  she had STAGE IV cancer of the colon.  That same night, she was operated on at the Cardinal Santos Hospital.  The surgeon found metastases in her liver.  When I last saw her at a family gathering,  she was looking radiant.  Latest update was she’s responding well to chemo.  I hope and pray that God bless her with many many more years of happy life.

The cousin of my friend Sylvia,   not even 40 years old , recently died of colon cancer.  It was already Stage IV when discovered.  Although she was given a year to live,  she fought and lived for 3 more years.  Her family and relatives had colonoscopy after her cancer was discovered.

Lyn’s aunt from New York recently retired and was looking forward to coming home for good.  With zero mortgage and  with a considerable amount of pension to receive, she was excited to her life of comfort in the Philippines.  She built a nice house in Quezon City and bought a brand-new car.  Last June, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer of the colon.   In an instant,   whammm, all her retirement plans were gone.  She’s currently undergoing treatments at St. Luke’s Hospital, and she,  is very depressed.

Cancer is like you’re  dancing hip-hop with Usher then all of a sudden someone switched off the music, lights and pulled the rug under your feet.  You fell hard and hit your head on the floor.  You open your eyes and you see death staring at you.  You  can’t hide or run,  you just have to stare back .
