A day after my mother-in-law’s 91st birthday, her youngest sibling and sister, Flor, passed away peacefully in her sleep. She was 86. She had suffered a stroke a week prior.
My impression is that those vulnerable to stroke or heart ailments are overweight, but Auntie Flor was the opposite. She was thin.
When Edmund’s parents moved to Malabon, Edmund and his two elder brothers were left behind in Iloilo to study. It was Auntie Flor who dedicated her single-blessedness to taking care of the three boys. She never married. She had dreams of living in the United States but that dream she sacrificed for Edward and his family. She stayed and took care of their family and business.
Every time we saw her, she always had a big smile and always asked about my son.
Their relatives from Iloilo and Antique came to the wake and attended the burial at the Heritage Memorial Park in Paranaque.

When I mentioned to my mother-in-law that we bought a lot in Heritage Park last August, she asked saan dun, malapit sa toilet. She said mabuti, malapit lang. Ha ha we’ll be neighbors. Modesty aside, I don’t want to use the toilets in cemeteries. Nakikilabutan ako. So when my time comes, I will build my own toilet so that at night, I don’t have to get up and walk one block to pee. Baka madilim. Baka may multo.
