Highway 54 is the former name of EDSA.     It’s a 54 kilometer stretch from Roxas Blvd  to Monumento.   It was constructed in 1940 and was originally called  the North and South Circumferential Road.     The Americans changed the name to Highway 54 after World War II.

In 1959,   It was renamed Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue in his honor as a statesman from Malabon, Rizal.     Eulogio Rodriguez and Juan Francisco Sumulong spearheaded the campaign in renaming Highway 54.

Even when I was already in my teens,  people still referred to EDSA as Highway 54.

We have a propensity to rename streets and edifices.     I hope  no  public official  wakes-up one morning feeling the urge to rename this after some hot shot guy.

EDSA has become the major access road to anywhere.    On a good day,  you can reach Makati from Quezon City in 15 minutes.   But most days  it could take 45 minutes to a good hour.
