I hate Delta Airlines - Oh My Buhay

I hate Delta Airlines

I almost missed my flight because Delta Airlines didn’t honor my ticket from NY to SFO.

What happened was:
I originally intended to take PAL MANILA-SFO-MANILA. So I got SFO-JFK-SFO from Delta using 50,000 Skymiles. I wanted to drop by Aileen’s place and spend two nights there before proceeding to my nephew’s wedding in NY, but I couldn’t leave Manila sooner so I changed my route. I bought a one way Delta- Manila-Narita-JFk. Then one way PAL- SFO-Manila.

I went to Delta’s office in Salcedo Village, Makati on Monday, July 1 and informed them that I bought a ticket straight to JFK instead of using SFO-JFK, but I would be using my JFK to SFO. They told me that I should’ve come 72 hours prior to my flight so they could credit my miles back. The lady at the Delta counter told me that since my flight was less than 72 hours, they couldn’t credit it back. Fine, Inisip ko, sayang the 25,000 miles, ang tagal -tagal kong inipon. Pero at least I would be able to use the other 25,000 miles for JFK-SFO.

For the record: No one from Delta ever told me when I got those tickets that:
1. I have to cancel before 72 hours to be able to credit the miles back in case.
2. that if I don’t use the SFO-JFK, the return flight JFK-SFO would automatically be invalidated.
3. That I should inform them before 72 hours to credit back my return miles.
Kung alam pa nila na ganun, then why didn’t they tell me right there and then that the return would be invalidated and they would just credit back the ramaining 25,000 miles? Oh malayo pa yun, I was in their office on July 1, the flight was supposed to be on July 15.

Again, for the record, the only information they provided me was about the rebooking fee of $150 each leg.

Now, they all claimed that I had been informed. NO. NEVER. NO. NEVER.

I had to buy a one way ticket to SFO for US$630+ plus $25 baggage fee for one maleta or else I wouldn’t be able to fly to SFO. Too late for me to make choices- to fly other airlines instead. Six hundred bucks, na wala akong ka laban-laban. Para akong naghulog ng pera sa kanal. Plus I lost 50,000 Skymiles I saved for 10 years.

I was so distraught.

I hate Delta Airlines.

When I tried using my mileage when my son was traveling to the US last May, they told me I needed 250,000 miles, instead of the standard 120,000 miles. Why? that’s the only seat available on the days my son would be flying. Huh?

And, for ordinary passengers, you can no longer choose isle seats, window seats, unless you pay extra. Those are blocked just in case frequent travelers fly. How can first time Delta passengers get to like your service and be encouraged to keep on flying Delta if you treat ordinary passengers with no importance at all?
Puro middle seats na lang available, or pay $159 for Economy comfort seats each way, na masikip rin naman.

I tried using our mileage a few times in the past to travel to Tokyo pero ang daming restrictions. Do I have to book two years in advance? And no good seat available because it’s only an award ticket? No, I beg to disagree. Loyalty points are not Free. We earned them by paying you good money. By flying with you long hauls for many years.

Repeat. I hate you Delta Airlines.

So very much.

  1. Hi Annie!

Thank you for this post. I’m member of Flying Blue (KLM), a sky team alliance same as Delta. I earn points kahit Delta ako mag fly. But then lately, may mga tours and hotel stays na you can earn points if member ka ng Delta Sky Miles. So last year ng member din ako ng Delta, plus I have Delta sky miles credit card. I’m actually planning to ask Flying Blue if its possible to transfer my flying blue points to Delta Sky Miles. With your experience, am having second thoughts. I have no experience yet claiming/using Delta miles, with flying blue meron na at ang dali. I booked award miles online ( Paris to Rome) for 3 adults, plus nakapili ng seats na walang charge. Nagamit ko na rin Manila-Kuala Lumpur-Manila, this time by calling their toll free number, and it’s also hassle free.

Maybe I’ll retain na lang Flying Blue.

Thank you and enjoy your vacation!

    1. Hi Luming,
My daughter said it’s better to deal with Delta headquarters online, not thru their Manila office.
What happened to me may be different from your situation.

      Thank you for your comment.
      Regards,
      Annie
