I have Osteoporosis (sigh!)

I couldn’t help but cry for a while yesterday morning after I received the official reading of my bone densitometry test.

I have osteoporosis. I am now officially a very old woman.
Kulubot, tigang, lutong.

My husband said it’s useless crying, I just have to learn how to accept it and live with it. He also said I should stop wearing slippers I bring home from the hotels because they are slippery. I should just walk around the house barefooted. Delikado daw yung ginagawa ko na humahakbang ako sa bathtub. Baka daw ako madulas. I should remove na daw my bathtub.

I want to buy pa naman a bicycle, I want to bike around the mini-farm. Although the road is only short, at least kahit pabalik-balik lang. Husband said I could still bike but three wheels para hindi ako matumba. Tricycle yun hindi bicycle.

According to the bone density and vertebral assessment report, there is a need for pharmacologic intervention. Treatment options include bisphosphonate, strontium, raloxifene, denosumab and teriparatide. Ewan kung ano yang mga yan. More medicines injected or infused into my body would mean more kidney problems.

Non-pharmacologic measures such as weight-bearing activities for at least 30 minutes daily or 1 hour for three times a week and a well balanced diet (to include 1,200 mg of elemental calcium daily and 800 – 1,000 IU of vitamin D are likewise strongly encouraged. A serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D assay is recommended to rule out vitamin D deficiency (sigh!)

I went to the grocery last night and bought natural food with high calcium contents like smoked salmon, corn flakes, milk, sardines, dark green leafy veggies.
Since I don’t drink pure milk, I bought champorado and tuyo. I will just put a lot of milk.

milk, corn flakes, champorado,

  1. Ms Annie, the best for osteoporosis is boiled chicken bones, beef bones, pork bones, fish bones, and turkey bones.. all kinds of bones. (can mixed or boiled altogether) then drink the soup. Bulalo is good because there is bones on it. Also eating lettuce is good for the bones.

  2. Hi Dee, thank you for this info, I ate bulalo soup last night and lettuce salad the other night.

  3. Dilis is also good once in a while. Too mucn may cause hypertension because,of water retention from sodium. Always have a lighted area everytime you wake up and go to the bathroom to avoid slipping and protect your hip bones. Make sure floors are dry And shower areas are with antislip rubber pads. Just avoid any injury while you are still improving bone density. i hope you were not taking any meds that are causing bone resorption. i have read menopause also causes osteoporosis because of hormonal changes. You may want to also consult an endocrinoligist.

    1. Thank you Joey, my doctor brother also advised me the same thing, to go see an endocrinologist.

  4. I have it too. Also arthritis.it’s very discouraging for me because I had to stop running.I didn’t want to do anything else but the advice about weight bearing activities is sound.Even some is better than none.I do water aerobics now and I don’t like it as much as running but it is effective.

  5. Hi Deb,

I”ve started carrying some things while walking around the house. Oyen gave me a tiny dumb bell.
I dread the thought that my bones are cracking. I am thinking of swimming for a few minutes once a week, then two times a week. I am so lazy to exercise.

Btw, we have a Tan family and close friends reunion on May 7. Lunch to dinner. Pls join us.

Will send you more details soon.

    Warm regards,
    An
