I grew up seeing my father under the hood tinkering with his vehicle’s engine. Wearing a white sando, it’s not unusual for him to dirty his hands and shirt while adjusting nuts and bolts, cleaning the radiator, tightening screws, measuring the oil. He could do complicated repairs.
When buyers come to our showroom, they normally look at the car’s exterior, the dashboard, the seats, the ceiling, lights, wheels. They usually focus on the overall look, yung tindig daw nung kotse.
When I see them opening the hood to look at the cables, wiring, engine, etc. they remind me of my childhood and my papa.
Once convinced with the overall look of the vehicle, they ask about the promos, financing, etc.
But rarely do they look at the engine.
Two days ago, I saw one Makati Ford’s client seriously inspecting the Ford Fiesta’s engine.
In my many years of working in automotive, I’ve only seen a woman inspecting the engine once. Nakakagulat. Mekanika?
