MANGETSU - Oh My Buhay

Last night after attending the Holy Mass, we ventured away from our Saturday comfort zone and drove beyond the usual two kilometer radius and dined at Mangetsu, the authentic Japanese restaurant in Jupiter Street, Makati.

These two guys welcomed yours truly as soon as I entered the restaurant.

A bowl of coins is at the entrance, not for you to get, but for you to leave your money behind, by ordering a lot of food like what we did. When you come here, don’t bring coins, bring your credit cards.

Oyen and I just had Japanese food a few days ago and I wasn’t expecting to eat a lot.

Mangetsu has an extensive list of dishes. Being first timers, it took us a few minutes to go over their comprehensive menu.

Firs time we ordered this much. We just tried everything that we thought were good, thinking that the portions would be small or the same size as in most Japanese restaurants.
Constant in my orders is agadeshi tofu. Awa ng dyos, my order is going to be my lunch today because last night I couldn’t finish it. We still have tempura in the ref although Oyen ate most of it for her breakfast this morning. We still have a big bowl of fried rice in our ref good for Edmund’s lunch.

The crispy shrimp heads reminded me of that very expensive restaurant in Tokyo.

Our dining experience was fulfilling and we were relaxed. The place smells good, smells and looks clean, hindi amoy ulam, and despite the number of people dining last night, the temperature was still cold but not chilly, and even with the dingdong bells attached to every table, the level of noise was tolerable. The tables are not too close to each other which is perfect for us. Ayaw ko yung talikuran kami nung ibang tao.

I give the quality of the food 99%. The water is 75% because there was hair stuck to Edmund’s glass when the waitress with very long hair and bangs covering her face served it. She should put her hair in a bun to avoid her hair flying around.

Overall, the place and the food are superb. I also found their prices very reasonable. We ordered food good for a dozen hungry people and yet our bill was only P4,500.
