Oxbow Market and Lunch at Hog Island Oysters - Oh My Buhay

Oxbow Market and Lunch at Hog Island Oysters

The Oxbox Public Market in Napa Valley is a favorite daytrip pasyalan. You know, people all over the world now always look for some place to visit, where else to eat, what to bring home for a few bucks. Just a change of routine or scenery. People’s lifestyles are now like that. It has always been but more so now.

About one hour away by car from my sister’s house is the Oxbow Market where a branch of Hog Island Oysters is located at.  We like coming here and don’t mind standing in line, waiting for a table.

The waiter forgot about us. We were ahead of those at the three other tables around us and yet they were served much sooner. We made several follow ups and still no food came.  In the meantime,  the other diners were already half-way their meal and we were still waiting.

After a very long wait, our food finally arrived.  The manager acknowledged their shortcomings and apologized which we gladly accepted.  We didn’t get angry,  we were just wondering what happened.  Why we were given the last priority or no priority at all.

When the bill came, they removed an item as a form of restitution or discount.  We didn’t expect to receive any free food or item.  We just wanted to be given good service. We’re a regular and very loyal customer of Hog Island Oyster.
To return the courtesy discount they extended to us, we left a big tip. Like 30% or more.

At the onset of the pandemic, in early 2020, all the restaurants closed.  I received a heartwarming email from the owner expressing his sadness and feeling of uncertainty with regards to the future of their restaurant.  If I remember it right, he even mentioned something about the salaries of the employees.  I felt his pain and worry being a business owner myself.  Naawa nga ako.

To help their business going, I ordered fresh oysters and clam chowder to continue my patronage.  They were efficient, the shipment arrived as per schedule.

Things have changed a bit at Hog Island.  Bread is no longer included.  You have to order and pay extra.  There’s no more ice in drinking glasses.  Water is upon request.  The clam chowder is no longer flavorful.  In my opinion, the chowder needs more taste or seasoning.

These are not criticisms. These are constructive comments coming from a very old and loyal customer.

After our meal, we went around the small market looking for some exciting stuff. There were some fruits variety that were novelty to me.
