Prof. Gabriella Blum

The only female among our professors is no less than Gabriella Blum. Just like Prof. Bruce Patton, she has a long list of credentials and one of the bests in her field.

When I saw Prof. Gabriella Blum waiting for everyone to get seated, she looked serious. Ninerbyos ako agad. I felt like, o oh, she looked strict. Although she looked gorgeous, my first impression was that she would be very serious and stiff. I was wrong. Her teaching style was fast but not furious. She was approachable, candid, clear in her words. The minute the ball got rolling, Prof. Blum turned into a superstar in my eyes. She was incredibly knowledgeable in negotiation and I told her I wish she were my sister so I could call her anytime to ask for advice. She replied by saying I am so sweet.

Here’s a short biography provided by the school:

She is also the Faculty Director of the Program on International Law and Armed Conflict, and a member of the Program on Negotiation Executive Board.

Prior to joining the Harvard faculty in the fall of 2005, Blum served for 7 years as a Senior Legal Advisor int he International Law Department of the Military Advocate General’s corps in the Israel Defense Forces, and for another year, as a Strategy Advisor to the Israeli National Security Council.

She’s a graduate of Tel-Aviv University (LLB in 1995), Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1997, and of Harvard Law School in 2001 and SJD in 2003.

Islands of Agreement, book by Gabriella Blum

Some of the things I learned:

I am sure you’ve heard of these words before from angry people who want revenge—-
“I want to teach him a lesson”.
“I will teach him a lesson”.
“Tuturuan ko sya ng leksyon”.

Professor Blum said IT’S NOT OUR JOB TO EDUCATE OTHER PEOPLE.
Do not teach other people a lesson unless they are our children.

WE SHOULD KNOW OURSELVES, OUR LIMITATIONS, OUR TRIGGER POINTS, WHAT MAKES US ANGRY. When we are feeling frustrated or angry, we should go out, go to the balcony, to calm us down so we don’t lose our balance.
