Professor Brian Mandell

I was inspired to look, listen, and learn. The professors were all approachable and seemed down to earth. They did not come across as snobbish or egoistic.

Before coming to Harvard, Professor Brian Mandell taught at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University in Ottawa. He was a strategic analyst for the Canadian Department of National Defense, specializing in UN peacekeeping and the implementation of arms control agreements. He teaches at Harvard Law School and at the Kennedy School’s Center for Public Leadership.

He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, was involved in establishing the Canadian Centre for Arms Control and Disarmament.

A few points that I learned:

1. Henry Kissinger said, “the tragedy in negotiation is paying someone way more than he deserves, and he doesn’t even care about”.
2. No long term value will be achieved if all the parties are not in for the long term.
3. People put a different value on relationships. Some manipulate.
4. It is not business, it is personal.

We had several interesting and challenging case studies and role-playing. I raised my hand, recited. He said I was very good. During the 15 minute recess, he told me I was very good. Hay, kilig naman ako.
