I was sick for two days so I just stayed in bed and watched the continuous news coverage of the Las Vegas Massacre. It’s ironic because one of the things that has drawn me into this place this past 11 months is the feeling that I am safer here. I can go out to any spot by myself and even if I take Uber, I really feel safe. When I am eating in a restaurant, I don’t have that fear that someone would just walk in and start shooting all of us.
Weird. The opposite had just happened.
It’s sad because Las Vegas is actually a family place. Thousands of families move to Las Vegas every year to seek for a better future. They come here to be productive, to earn a decent pay without fear of sweat. They don’t gamble.
Just 15 minutes off The Strip you see residential villages with real people, walking their dogs, pushing baby strollers, old people walking, couples jogging, people golfing, grocery shopping. Real people exist here. They have Bible studies, church services, craft groups, Harley Davidson rider group, charity groups. There’s a community in Las Vegas that thrive on good deeds. People are friendlier. I can stay for 30 minutes chatting with a complete stranger talking about family values, job opportunities, Trump, sports, etc. And people here are not spoiled. I have never seen such hard-working people. They have double, triple jobs and still find the energy to drive the Uber during their rest period. they work under the sun at 120 degrees searing heat.
To millions of people, Las Vegas is a stepping stone to a better life.
Millions of tourists flock here to celebrate birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, proposals, or just to be happy. This is America’s number one favorite vacation place.
And it only took one horrible person to blur that.
