Santa Clarang Pinung-pino

Many childless couples go to Obando, Bulacan to ask for the intercession of San Pascual Baylon and Santa Clara to have children.
They dance on the streets during the town fiesta in May while singing the Santa Clarang Pinung-pino.

Santa Clarang pinong-pino.
Ang hiling ko po ay tupdin ninyo
Pagdating ko po sa Obando
Magsasayaw ako ng pandanggo

Aruray!
Abarinding!
Ang pangako ay tutuparin!

Santa Clarang pinong-pino,
Ako po ay bigyan mo
Ng asawang labintatlo

Sa gastos ay walang reklamo!

Ahhh wait. Why is the lyrics like that? Asking for asawa, labingtatlo pa? That’s not funny. What the ef ef is that? Espousing adultery and concubinage on the 13th degree? Grabe.

And if couples wanted to have children, why would they sing that song?
It doesn’t say bigyan nyo po ako ng anak, kahit tatlo lang. Instead you are asking for 13 spouses!! Something is not right.

Bakit ganun, kailan nagsimula itong Santa Clarang pinung-pino?
Mga kababayan, ano ba naman yan, basahin or pakinggan nyo naman ang sinasabi nung kanta. Yan ba ang dinadayo nyo sa Obando? Para magka-asawa ng labingtatlo?
