With all the problems and health challenges he’s been dealing with in the past several months, my husband is the last person who would want to throw a birthday party. He just wanted to have a quiet family time, visit the church, eat, go home and sleep. I in fact asked him several times if he would like to host a simple dinner for his friends and relatives. Ayaw nya.
Kahit ako siguro, marami kang iniisip, masakit lagi leeg, ulo, likod, tuhod, tabingi ang ngiti, lula, bakit ako magpa-party?
But my daughter and the managers wouldn’t want it that way. They didn’t want to let his birthday go by without happy moments. They whipped up a surprise celebration, no guests, just we and us.
The bad thing about announcing that my husband is 60 years old is that people would conclude that I am also 60 years old.
The plan took several weeks of preparation. My assignment was to make sure Edmund does not go to the office on this day. Kasi merong caterer, nagpa-practice sila ng dance, nag de decorate, etc.
I told him we’re having lunch somewhere in Greenhills and that we have to swing by the office to sign some documents.
60 individual cakes for each year. I suggested to use battery operated candles for practicality reasons. It’s hard to keep a wax candle lighted. It would drip on the cake too. And we don’t expect Edmund to blow 60 candles baka hikain sa kaiihip.
The 59 cakes were free for all, whoever wants to bring one home.

I didn’t agree on the managers’ initial idea of asking each cake bearer to give a message. Naku aabutin kami ng bukas and what do we expect that they would say? Happy birthday Boss, wishing you good health, paulit-ulit lang syempre. It would be boring. I suggested that they just film the greetings.
