Susan, Filipino in Hawaii

She kept knocking at our room door.  We were not yet ready to leave the room but the housekeeping was anxious because she was going home after half-hour.

I finally agreed to let her in even if we were still in the room.  I told her “okay, you may come in, we’re leaving in a few minutes”.

I told my kids to go ahead and wait for me at the lobby.

The housekeeper started cleaning the toilet.   As I was going out of the room,  I asked her

A———-“What’s your name?”

Housekeeper——-“Susan”.

A———–“Thank you Susan”.

Susan——“Where are you from?  Are you Thai?”

A———–“No, we’re from Manila, Philippines”.

Susan—–“Pilipino kayo?  Ako rin,  from Ilocos Sur.  Ilocano ako”.

I thought she was Latina because of her mestiza features.

Susan—–“Tiga Davao ang boss ko”.

Susan met her husband Domeng here in Hawaii.  He works as  a bus driver and is originally from Pangasinan.

She last visited her hometown in 1986.

They have 3 kids and two grandchildren.   She has no Facebook, only Instagram.  She took out a pouch and opened a supot with her cell phone.

Susan——–“Bawal kasi.  Ipakita ko sayo litrato ng anak ko at mga apo”.
