We have 22 native chickens

As of last count, we now have 22 chickens. They are slowly multiplying. Chickie and Curry have not contributed to the growth of their population because it’s either they eat their own eggs and or the eggs are bugok.

Out of the 22 native chickens, half are tandang (roosters). The caretaker wanted me to bring home six to reduce their number because they are always fighting over the hens. Masarap daw ilutong adobo o tinola. Ayoko nga. How does one eat your own pet?
We want more hens but just like humans, we cannot predetermine or pre-order the gender of the chickens. It’s only after the eggs have hatched, that we’ll be able to see if it’s a he or a she. Pagtumatakbo na yung sisiw. He was saying that there’s one tandang who is always trying to mate with the other roosters, so he put him in a cage. What is that? Meron bang baklang manok?

Look how adorable they are. They are naughty though.

Our initial plan was not to harvest the eggs but to just let the chickens go and multiply. However, I changed my mind. Last time I visited, I asked the caretaker to collect ten eggs. I brought them home. I no longer want to eat eggs that are not from our chickens to make sure that they are not contaminated with steroids and artificial feeds.

Our chickens eat freshly picked papayas from the trees.
We let them roam around to fend for themselves.

It took me at least two weeks before I decided to finally cook these eggs. I felt guilty cooking them. It was like me killing our pets.
