Too Young to Die

I went to a wake yesterday afternoon in Pila-pila, Binangonan, Rizal.
I was pressed with time because I left the house at almost 1:30 pm because I waited for Malou who worked half-day.
I had to be back by 5:45 because we’re attending the 6 pm mass.
I picked up Luming and Malou from SM Megamall. I swung by Ford Cainta for a few minutes, then we traveled for an hour to Binangonan. It should have been a half hour drive from Cainta but we couldn’t go faster with all those tricycles, jeepney, narrow roads and people walking alongside the road oblivious to the danger of being ran over.

Pila-pila is my mom’s birthplace, most people here are relatives of hers.

Graduate of Industrial Engineering from Dela Salle University, works at DHL Philippines, lives in a condo in Makati he shares with his siblings, drives his own car, with affluent parents, good looking, the youngest son of Erly and Marlito Gondraneos has a full life ahead of him. Supposed to be.

However, he died at the young age of 23.

Erly said Gene had been depressed for several months because of his break-up with his childhood sweetheart of nine (9) long years. It was a serious relationship and his son’s life revolved around her. There were plans of a wedding in 2016 and the parents of the boy and girl called each other balae.

They noticed last Monday that he looked bad. They brought him to a psychiatrist who prescribed sleeping pills because he complained that he couldn’t sleep. He’s not been able to get enough sleep for the past three months.

According to his office mates, they noticed a change in his personality. He’s been quiet and walang kibo daw parang distracted.

He was asked to stay home for a week to get a full rest.
According to Erly, his son gave her his ATM pin number. Nagtaka nga daw sya kung bakit. He also asked her to return his company laptop to his employer, DHL Philippines.

Wednesday morning, they found him sleeping soundly in the master’s bedroom hugging a pillow. Marlito went out of the house to look at something. In a few minutes, he went back to their bedroom to check on his son, he was no longer in the bedroom. He checked in the toilet, he wasn’t there either. He went up to his son’s own room on the second floor of their house, there he found him slumped on the floor. He tried to revive him but he didn’t respond. They own several cars but neither Erly nor Marlito know how to drive. They called a tricycle who brought Gene to the nearest medical center in the town proper, which is near the fish port. Their son was declared dead on arrival.

There was an abundance of food: Red ribbon mamon, Zesto juice, puto, pansit, cassava cake, embotido, hamonado, sopas, kaldereta, etc. It’s like fiesta.
