The US dollar go up, up, up, and a way

OFWs and those who receive US dollar pensions or income are happy when the dollar goes up.

Not me.

US dollar rate

Our income is in pesos. My son lives in the US and spends dollars. When we travel, we also pay in dollars— hotel, airline tickets, credit cards. Even before our bill arrives, even before we even get there, the foreign exchange rate has already changed. It just goes up, up, and up, and up.

Travel will become even more expensive.

My sister asked me, “Ate, paano tayo magta-travel?”

My answer? Magta-travel pa rin tayo. But we can’t shop for kung anu-ano anymore. And we will downgrade. Hindi na five-star hotel, hindi na four-star hotel, three-star na lang or two-star, or Airbnb na lang.

She didn’t sound happy.

“Wala nang room cleaning? Wala nang breakfast buffet?”

Ganun na nga.

We have confirmed round-trip tickets to Madrid via Emirates Airlines. But because of the ongoing nonsense war, my daughter found us an alternative booking on Cathay Pacific. The ticket prices have skyrocketed. Para bang bibili ka na ng mura na kotse, tickets pa lang. And all the business class and nice seats were already taken.

When I told my husband that the tickets we got on Cathay were in premium economy, he didn’t look pleased. Mahaba kasi legs niya—— baka mauuntog sa seat in front of him. Masakit din kasi likod niya, and it’s hard for him to move if the seats are not wide and properly reclinable.

He is still hoping the war will stop by next week so we can go back to Emirates.

Nakupo… malabo yata ’yan.

Buong mundo.

  1. I thankfully earn in USD but unfortunately spend in PHP. So to me its 50-50. Both win and lose (if that makes sense)
