A COUNTRY IMPERILED

” When President Ferdinand E. Marcos sounded the alarm bells over the communist threat, which he raised on the Plaza Miranda bombing of August 21, 1971 and the landing in Isabela Province of automatic rifles and other war materials smuggled from Red China in July 1972, his critics discredited him by saying that he was merely fabricating excuses to turn the country into a garrison state”.

“We have a country with the best and brightest people; a country strategically located at the center of the world and endowed by nature with huge deposits of gold, oil, detereium and other resources…. ”

These are excerpts from the book “A Country Imperiled (Tragic Lessons of a Distorted History) given to me by the author himself, Dr. Cecilio T. Arillo.
Cecil also wrote the bestselling books BREAKAWAY and Greed & Betrayal.

I started reading it today and With my problematic eyes, I expect to finish the 320 pages much longer.

  1. Dear Anne,
I came across your Oh My Buhay blog thru my daughter Carla Catuncan, a graduate of Fordham. She came across your daughter Jules blog and she shared that with me and hence came across yours. Your stories amuse me and I always keep tract of all your updates. How I wish you can include me as one of the recipients of the book “A Country Imperiled”. I used to work for the United Nations in New York and have just recently retired and now I have all the time to keep up to reading. We live in Monroe, NJ and if you respond to my email and you so decide to include me as one of your lucky recipients of the book, i can email you my complete address. I enjoy so much your blogs, especially the ones that make me smile and sometimes laugh out loud while reading them.
My daughter, after graduating from Fordham, got married, then right after their wedding, she and husband got into law school at Dayton University in Ohio where on their second year of full time law studies, she got pregnant and had a very beautiful baby girl. They have graduated last year, took the New Jersey and New York Bar andpassed them. They are now desperately lookingfor jobs which is quite tough now with the economic crisis here in the US.
We have stayed here for more than 20 years. We came from BF Homes in Las Pinas. Carla Michelle used to study at La Salle Alabang before we moved to the US.
Again, thank you so much for your wonderful articles. God bless you and the family,
    Josie Catuncan

    1. Hi Josie,
Thank you for your comments and thanks so very much for reading ohmybuhay.
Yes, send me your complete mailing address and I will send you a copy of the book, you’ll most likely receive it sometime in March.

      Regards,
      Annie

      1. Hi,

I am the daughter of Josie Catuncan (from comment above). Thanks for sending my mom a copy of the book. It will be put to good use. I plan on borrowing it when my mom is done reading it. I was born in the Philippines, but have lived here since I was 8. I’m ashamed to say that I don’t know much about my country’s history. I believe it is important to know where one comes from and I think this book might satisfy my new-found fascination about Philippine history.

Please say hi to Jules for me. She probably knows me as Mitz. I was in FUPAC with her.

        Thanks again!

        Best,
        Mitz

  3. Dear Anne,

Thanks in advance for the book ,i can’t wait to read it from cover to cover and in this Internet era..book reading is a rare luxury and besides i used to read a lot before ,i used to buy and do some research work in Popular bookstore somewhere in Sta Cruz..dont really know if it still open for business..it’s quite a hit for Progressive minded students then ..yes aside from being a huge Basketball fan i also love to read books which dwells on politics..
Thanks for your blog i like it..It seems Edmund is comfortable with his life after his short Basketball career..it’s quite short unlike UST legends like Danny Florencio ,Bogs Adornado and Alfredo Jarencio ,Ed Cordero ..if only he pursued it ..Edmund should be in that level of UST greats..im not a Thomasian but my Basketball instinct tells me that good and deadly players comes from that school..Edmund Yee was the last of the deadly pure shooters to come out from that school ..even now fans are still looking for that outside shooters which our country badly needs ..anyway so much for that off topic..
Tony..once upon a time a fan of Edmund Yee and other talented Collegiate players in that glorious era..

    1. Dear Tony,

Edmund for sure would be flattered with your kind words.
He still loves basketball but maybe it’s destiny that he didn’t become a pro. He broke his knee.

He’s very much into golf and has won many many trophies. I think athletes really have a natural way in sports, maybe because of their training, natural agility and body coordination. Edmund has gained some notoriety when it comes to golf. He recently joined a group of 20 to Xiamen. It was 4 days golf and he won the 2nd, 3rd and 4th days. He has become club champions several times but age is catching up on him. Masakit na bewang nya.

I will pick up the books tonight with your names signed by the author. Will send them asap.

Thanks once again for reading ohmybuhay,

      Regards,
      Annie

  4. Dear Annie ,

    regards,
    Tony
