Toddler Plays with a Bolo / Itak - Oh My Buhay

Toddler Plays with a Bolo / Itak

March 2, 2019, Saturday

As we always do, we stopped in front of a corn vendor along the Sta. Rosa – Tagaytay Road to buy corn. I rolled down my window and told the male vendor to find me corns that have smaller and softer kernels.

While I was waiting, I noticed an older woman with her back turned against the road, busy chatting on her cellphone. Then I noticed a toddler, still wearing a disposable diaper, must be 2 years old, who was walking and holding something that looked heavy. When I looked again to see what she was holding, Oh my God, I could not believe what I was seeing. I was shocked. I said “Oh my God!!”

The little girl was playing with a bolo or itak, or a big knife similar to a machete.

I looked at the father in disbelief. He seemed oblivious to the fact that his daughter was playing with his itak, the one used primarily as a cutting tool for bamboos, sugar cane, clearing grassy fields, and in opening coconut shells.

It was impossible that the father and the Lola didn’t notice what the girl was doing. At some point she was hitting the side railings of the crib with the large knife.

Too scary. I hope she doesn’t get hurt, ever.
