A few years ago, I sat beside a socialite lady at the party of Johnny Litton. She came from an old rich landed clan and she is married to an investment banker
She was so pretty and well put together that night. From her hair down to her shoes. She deserved to be on the cover of Mega Magazine, Vogue or Cosmopolitan Manila. She was carrying a maroon Kelly bag by Hermes. She told me she bought her bag in Boston, Massachusetts. She also shared with me the story of her female friend who went to Barcelona for a holiday five years prior to our conversation.
According to her friend, she was able to purchase a Birkin bag so easily from the Hermes boutique in Barcelona. She just walked in and when she asked about the Birkin, they had a ready bag for her.
She said wow, it was that easy. So there was no truth to the myth that buying a Birkin was more of luck than money. When her friend went back to the Philippines, she sold her Birkin bag to another friend for a good profit. She thought it was easy to buy another one. The next time she traveled, it was not as easy as when she walked into that Barcelona boutique and came out with a Birkin. In fact, she’s been traveling all around the world and until now, she never had the same luck. She doesn’t have a Birkin because she sold her first one.
With that story in mind, I told my daughter and Edmund that I would go to the Hermes store in Barcelona and see if I could buy a smaller Birkin. I told them, what if they gave me a color I didn’t like. My husband said that’s a no brainer. Just get any color. And so I went to the Hermes store in Barcelona, encouraged by the story of that lady who said it was very easy to get a Birkin here. No line daw.

This store is small and has practically no handbag on display. I inquired from the Spanish sales staff about the Birkin. He said they only get very few delivery of bags and they usually don’t know beforehand what kind of bags are coming. He said the Birkin is rare and they have a long list of clients waiting. With that, It was obvious that even if I listed my name, it would take zero chance for me to get to the first line. I thanked him and said ADIOS.
I wondered, what happened to the story of that lady that it was so easy to buy a Birkin bag here in Barcelona? Did the circumstances change since that story happened some 7 years ago? Or was the story even true?
