Shock Wave Lithotripsy - Oh My Buhay

Edmund has been suffering from moderate to severe lower back pains.
He suspected that the pain was coming from his kidney. His ultrasound showed he has one big kidney stone.

After getting a second and third opinion, he decided to have the kidney stone removed. Our family doctor, Dr. Palafox, was against it because the shock wave could affect his kidney in the long run. I personally doubted that the pains were caused by the movement of his kidney stones. But he wanted to eliminate all possible causes so he went on with the non-invasive procedure called lithotripsy or shock wave at the Cardinal Santos Hospital.

December 9 was a busy day for me because I have an important luncheon meeting and another event at night. Because of the traffic situation, it would be difficult for me to go to Makati then come back, then go back to Makati. I asked Oyen to accompany her dad to the hospital.

She and dad left the house early, for the 8 am Lithotripsy procedure.
High-energy sound waves would be directed to the stone. The shock waves pass through your body without injuring it and hopefully would break the stone into smaller pieces. These smaller pieces are expected to pass through the urinary tract.
After a month, Edmund has to have another ultrasound to see if the stone had disintegrated and disappeared.

I followed after an hour. The shock wave procedure lasted for an hour.
The nurse let Oyen and I in when Edmund woke up.

The new gadget replaced the need to manually monitor a patient’s blood pressure.

How is he now? Ayun, masakit pa rin ang likod.

  1. Give it time, Ms Annie.. 😉 Baka naman sumakit pa rin kc nabasag na into small pieces ang kidney stone nya.. Saka even if the tiny pieces will pass thru the urinary tract, mejo mahapdi din daw un pag nag wiwi si sir Edmund.. Cguro it’s more like Nangangalay ang pakiramdam ng back nya more than pain.. 🙂

I hope the procedure will help lessen his back pains.. 😉

take care and God bless u and sir Edmund and the family.. God bless u all..

  2. Hi Ms. Annie, many doctors are against the non invasive procedure because for one, none of them will get the fee from surgery. But kidding aside, way back in 2003, a friend doctor had his kidney stone removed by surgery because he said para walang matira na bato. Vitamin D increases calcium oxalate in the blood, golfers get lots of Vit D from the sun. Most stones are made up of Calcium oxalate.

May supplements din na nakaka tanggal doon sa maliliit na bato, iyong Sambong.
