Movie Date Night : Crazy Rich Asians - Oh My Buhay

Movie Date Night : Crazy Rich Asians

We’ve gone back to watching movies again in the cinema. For a long time, as in years, we stopped going out to movies. No more date nights. We watch a lot of movies still, dozens, only when we are on the plane, in-flight movies. But it’s different when we watch movies on the big screen while munching popcorn. It’s fun and relaxing most especially when the chair reclines fully similar to a Lazy Boy.

We went to Eastwood last Friday to watch the number one movie of the year, Crazy Rich Asians.
My daughter wanted us to imitate the pose of Nick Young and Rachel Chu in the poster but Edmund didn’t want to. Baduy daw.

Cinema 7 has fully reclining seats similar to Lazy Boy.

I thought of bringing a shawl in case it would be cold but It was a hot and sunny day so I decided not to. Sayang, a blanket or a large shawl would have been perfect. Sarap matulog dito.

We all enjoyed the movie Crazy Rich Asians. The plot is a love story that’s been told thousand times. It’s the time tested story line of rich boy meets poor girl, a tale as old as time. But what makes this movie different is it’s been presented elegantly and the scenes are very relatable. We are crazy and Asians. The feasts, food, parties for all occasions, the family traditions, houses, cars, drivers, security guards, maids, stage mothers.

We love to throw parties for 1st birthday, 2nd, 3rd, 4 months and a half, monthserries, first anniversary, 3rd, 4th, we always find reasons to celebrate with families, relatives, friends. Having two hundred people in a wedding is considered modest and yet in the West that is already considered lavish.

All the actors were perfect for their respective roles. Michelle Yeoh did great justice to being Eleanor, Nick Young’s mother. She looked so elegant and gorgeous in all the scenes. Henry Golding’s portrayal was so natural.
American rapper Nora Lim aka Awkwafina was great too as Rachel Chu’s friend and supporter.

I laughed when Nick Young said “We’re comfortable”. Rachel Chu replied “that’s exactly what super rich people say”. I still remember when the late Washington Sycip was asked how rich he was, he replied “I’m comfortable, a little more comfortable than most people”.

People are naturally curious about how rich people live. The movie showed a little bit of that.
“Rich people like free things”. Funny but true. We all like free things, whether we are rich, middle class, poor. Syempre basta libre go tayo.

I have friends who rent huge yachts for stargazing, birthday parties, or just bonding with family.

We don’t have to be ultra rich but we ladies hide shopping bags from our husbands. In my case I did that in our first 10 or 15 years of marriage. Eh kasi when he sees me with a blue shopping bag, he would say “pinayaman mo na naman si Henry Sy”. I hid plates from him because he would surely say “pinggan na naman? Di ba marami na tayong pinggan?”

Every time I visited my mom in the US where she resided till her passing, instead of saying “I miss you anak kumusta?” she would say “tila namayat ka? Hindi ka kumakain sa lugar”. Mukhang hapo ang katawan mo at hapi ang mukha mo”. “Sobra ka sa trabaho”. “Umitim ka yata, nung baby ka napaka puti mo para kang bulak”. “Bakit magaspang yang balat mo? Nung maliit ka napaka kinis ng balat mo”.

Everyone trooped to the bookstores or ordered online the second volume of Kevin Kwan’s best selling novel because they loved the movie and couldn’t wait to know what happened next. I didn’t read the book. My daughter had read it few years ago but she said the movie is better. ‘

If you haven’t yet, go and watch this movie. It’s entertaining.
