I turned down dozens of invitations or requests to be a wedding sponsor in the past, except for this one. I ran out of excuses, so here I was, in the company of honorable justices in the Philippines, standing as a first-time ninang sa kasal.
There were no more alibis I could think of. I became a wedding sponsor without saying yes. Up to the last minute, I was still asking the mother of the groom, Atty. Marievic Anonuevo, a recently retired senior partner at Sycip Law, “Why me?” Their family is a very good friend of ours.
Attorney Leo is a professor of law at Ateneo University.
The two had been dating for 13 years and were finally tying the knot. It was an honor and privilege that they chose me to be one of the many “honorable” ninang and ninong.
Leo and Kat gave me a set of brown fabrics for the lining, heavy main, and for the flowy top which fashion designer Amir Sali turned into something spectacular.
My dress was a little loose which was perfect kasi it felt so comfortable. Para akong naka daster lang.
Here I was at the wedding of Leo and Kat. I did my own make-up and sinuklay ko lang buhok ko. My husband was the one who “installed” my fake eye lashes. He said the lashes I bought were so manipis, dapat daw ang binili ko yung makapal and mahaba. Kaya hindi halata na meron akong fake lashes kasi ang konti lang, ang nipis.
There were ten wedding sponsors, my partner was Oliver, an uncle of the bride. He told me he’s from Los Angeles, was 4 years old when their family immigrated to the US. He is unmarried and takes care of his father who has dementia. “It’s sad” he told me.
The wedding was at 2 pm and the modern chapel in Hamilo Coast was not big enough to accommodate all the entourage and guests. The distance from the door to the improvised altar was also short for the purpose. The bride’s walk was not long enough to savor the incredible moment in a woman’s life.
My walk was also very short. Mas matagal pa pagdikit ni Edmund sa lashes ko kesa sa lakad ko going to the front of the chapel. Ilang hakbang lang nasa altar na kami. Thanks to my personal photographer, Edmund Yee, who took two photos of me and Oliver, awa ng Dyos, pangit ako sa picture. That’s not the fault of the photographer. Ang problema ay yung subject.

The women cried while listening to the heartfelt and well-written wedding vows of the couple. Their relationship and love withstood the test of time. Pinahinog ng panahon
They truly loved each other and were meant for one another.
Eto yung samahan na walang iwanan kahit ano man ang mangyari.
