Alkansya - Oh My Buhay

As early as 3 weeks ago,  I’ve already marked my calendar and posted reminder notes on our wall.  Today is the birthday of Nuestra Senyora Delas Angeles and it’s fiesta in Pila-pila,  the place where my mom came from.  The plan was to go to the office in the morning and then at 12 noon,  I would go to the fiesta and also visit my Kuya Ben’s grave and bring him some flowers.

Grabe ang ulan may kasama pang kidlat.  Edmund told me baka mag helicopter pa daw sya para hanapin ako.  He was referring to what happened during Ondoy.  The towns surrounding Laguna Lake were submerged and inaccessible by land.

So,  natakot tuloy ako umuwi na lang ako.  I made a quick trip to Robinson’s Galleria,  bought 2 buckets of popcorn.  If I get stuck at home,  I have something to munch on (ang babaw ko ha).

For lack of anything to do,  I decided today is the day.  The day that I will open my alkansya and count my money.  Yipee!

I bought this coin bank a year or a year and a half-ago in Robinson’s Department Store for about a hundred pesos. I actually bought 3 for me, my son, and my daughter.

I only dropped P10 coins.

These were my kids’ old piggy banks. When they were little, we had maids stealing from these pigs, kaya pala it took forever to fill these up with coins. Mga salbahe!

This is my son’s bear bank, puno na rin.   He drops any coin,  mostly P5 and P1.

Counting coins is very memorable to me. My parents had a small ice candy factory, the vendors would return before dark and “intrega” the day’s earnings. These were all in coins, nakalagay sa tabo.

I was required to help count these coins and “kalisut-tsuhin” (wrap/roll in paper). My father was very strict. He hated slow and inaccurate counting, and the quality of wrap must be perfect. Coins must not wiggle while in the wrapper or else he would re-do the wrapping and scold me.

My wrapping is dismal. No more practice.

I’m excited, how much did I save?

Magkano kaya?

Not bad.

I looked for Julienne’s alkansya in her room  but I couldn’t find it.  I found a zoo instead.

Ang dami.

Edmund came home at 4 pm,  the sun was up.  He said “para ka palang Department of Education,  pag dineclare na walang pasok,  umaaraw”.  Lungkot na nga ako kasi I wasn’t able to go to Pilapila,  tapos kakantsawan pa’ko.

  1. Ayy I remember my alkansiya when we were small, yung lata ng pineapple juice na 1 gallon. Remember sister we’ll make ice and sell it and the proceeds goes to the lata.. the lata is nailed to the wall para di manakaw. I miss our tindahan.
