Casino, Mani & Pacquiao

My parents-in-law used to live in Malabon, Rizal.   The couple living across the street from my in-law’s house supplied pritong mani (toasted peanuts) and  cornicks (crispy corn kernels) to the stalls in Divisoria.  From my in-law’s windows,  one could see their make shift production area.  They cooked  in huge kawali (pans) on improvised kalans (stove) using wood or charcoal.  The peanuts and cornicks were repacked in small plastic sachets.

The neighbors witnessed how this hardworking and very enterprising couple succeeded.  Their progress became obvious when they were able to buy their own brand new car and small delivery vehicle.  They were able to acquire the apartment they were just renting in.  They also bought the adjacent house owned by the former owner of the apartment.   Everything looked very promising for this couple.

After two years,  one by one the vehicles disappeared.  Then they lost the house.  It’s not clear however if they sold the house or was foreclosed by the bank.  Then they could no longer supply their dealers with the products that gave them good fortune.  They lost all their capital.

Why?  What happened?

Divisoria vendors and dealers paid them in cash.  While they were raking it in,  the husband started going to the casino.  When he lost all the cash he initially brought with him,  he would go home to Malabon to get some more cash and change his clothes believing that maybe his clothes gave him bad luck.   Sometimes he would stay in the casino for two days.

Last month, someone privy to the Pacquiaos told me that Manny has been losing a lot of money in the casino and in sabong.   A few days ago,  I came across a news article that the billionaire boxer blew P90,000,000  in one night or US$2.130 million.  Don’t blink,  you read it right, P90M in one night.

I hope this is not true,  sayang ang pera,  It can help so many poor people.
