Daily Readings from Harvard Law

I’ve been planning to go back to school but I couldn’t find the time. Supposedly the start was last January but it would be in dead winter and I wouldn’t be able to walk deep in snow. I kept on postponing it. Harvard had been sending me reminders to secure my spot. One morning while Edmund and I were in Helsinki, I woke up to another email from the school admin saying it was the last day of enrollment. While still half-asleep, I took the plunge and paid for the stiff tuition fee. When my credit card bill came, the only thing I could say was “oh my God!”

My daughter was worried I would get tired with the 8-5 a day classes but then this is something that has been in my notebook of plans so I might as well get it done and over with. I am getting older faster than I could accept it. So I might as well. While I can still read even if my eyes are malabo na, while I can still walk around the school’s expansive campus.

When my son was 4 and Oyen was 9, I was seriously planning on enrolling either in Massachusetts or at the London School of Business and Economics. I picked the school in London because their program was suitable to my schedule as a working mother. I only had to stay for one month every semester and they had classes in other countries too, 3 weeks each time. It was designed for people like me who couldn’t stay longer than a month away from home or away from work. But before I could enroll, they sent me a notice that the program had been canceled. That was a long time ago, I don’t know if they brought back that executive MBA program.

After the London school canceled that program, I focused on Harvard. They were sending me packets and packets of reading materials to orient myself with the program. When I saw the amount of money I would be spending for my tuition fee alone, bigla akong natauhan. Nanay ko po. Kayamanan na iyon. I thought of my daughter’s education instead. I decided not to pursue and think more about my daughter’s own college education.

Some goals never die. So here I am, still going for it although no longer the full program because I don’t need it anymore. I am not applying for a job, no additional credentials needed. I am also too old, no company would hire me.
I am taking an abridged version, subjects that are more focused. I can enroll quarterly or depending on my schedule or freewill. Or ’till I am able to cover what I wanted to learn. No pressure.
Hoping that what I learned, I would be able to share with others.
If, a very big IF, if I remember any of the lectures. Baka pagdating ng recess nalimutan ko na agad ang mga natutunan ko (#attentiondeficitdisorder).

Ever since I enrolled, the school has been sending me links to related subject matters, free lectures, and daily readings. Not only once a day but three times a day and last Sunday, there were 15 topics. Oh yeah, I read them every day, only the titles!!!! I am overwhelmed! But I have to read them, understand and learn, otherwise, my tuition fee would go to waste.

So my dear Harvard, please welcome your new student.
