Diabetes - Oh My Buhay

I have been feeling dizzy and having some bouts of sporadic headaches. I went to one of the best neurologists in town- Dr. Libarnes on the 2nd floor of the Cardinal Santos Hospital last thursday. My appointment was at 4:30 pm and I arrived half hour before my schedule.

There was a male doctor wearing a white gown that came in and told the doctor’s secretary that he would like to see Dr. Libarnes even for 5 minutes. Since there’s a patient inside, this doctor had to wait.
His conversation with Dr. Libarnes’ secretary could be heard my me and another woman since the room is too small.

Secretary: Doc, may asawa na ako ngayon.
Doc: So may anak na kayo?
Secretary: Wala pa, ewan ba
Doc : Baka hindi kayo marunong gumawa
Secretary: E paano ba, turuan mo kami
Doc : Ibaba mo muna ang panty mo!

My record showed that my last visit was in 2006, complaining also of headaches and dizziness.

I became paranoid while waiting for my turn. There was a Chinese woman in her 30s who was also waiting. She had a brain MRI. I asked her why, she said she’s always feeling dizzy and having headaches. She also suffers from migraine. Hmmm very similar to what I am feeling.

Dr. Libarnes is a veteran and obviously knows his trade.

Doctors- oh my buhay

He poked my head, forehead, temple, knees, shoulders, made me walk, skip, hop and stand on one leg. I seemed fine except he said I have arthiritis of the back and should stretch my neck and put hot towel on my shoulders and neck to relax the nerves and muscles.
He asked though if I have diabetes which reminded me that my last blood test showed high glucose level, high triglycerides and high bad cholesterol and low good cholest.

So the following day, friday, I went to the clinic of Dr. Perfecto Palafox. He scolded me a bit by not coming sooner. Yes, he said, it could be that my headaches are caused by high sugar. I maybe be pre-diabetic already. Both my parents had diabetes so I am also bound to have one he said but what I should do is to try to delay the onset to avoid any complications.

The following day I was at the Cardinal Santos very early for the glucose test.

As we get older, our medical bills go up naturally.

The receptionist asked me “mam, buntis ba kayo?” Hay, lagi na lang ganyan.

Cardinal Santos- oh my buhay

They gave me this orange bottle, I had to drink the whole thing, minus the bottle.

After six hours fasting, at zero hour, the first blood test.

I was given five minutes to drink this

One drop of this orange liquid tasted like the equivalent of three kilos of sugar. Grabe sa tamis. After taking about 1/4 bottle, I read the ingredients and contra-indications: nausea and vomitting. As soon as I saw that, I don’t know if it’s a psychological reaction, I suddenly felt nauseated, my head ached and I felt like vomitting!

It was such a struggle drinking this, parusa!

One hour after drinking some juice, here comes the second aray.
They want to check how my blood sugar reacted to the sangkatutak na asukal they made me drink.

Blood Test- 1/7/12- oh my buhay

They took my blood the third time two hours after I drank the juice. My blood sugar is now expected to go down after an hour otherwise they would conclude that I have diabetes
This is the third aray. This technician needs practice, ang sakit tumurok.

Glucose Testing- oh my buhay

I immediately lighted some candles and visited the Cardinal Santos chapel for help against diabetes.

  1. Hi Kinakapatid, so how did you do with the glucose challenge? all the pictures during blood draw walang suot ng gloves yun mga lab techs. hindi ba required sa pinas? Diabetes runs in our blood too. So always conscious ako sa sugar intake. Hopefully you just need to regulate your food intake and stress management. Take care. Aloha, Peng

  2. Hi Peng, the results are normal. Over-eating lang daw according to my doctor but I still need to control my sweet tooth.
I guess it’s not required to have gloves because all of them did not wear any.

  3. buti na lang I never did the glucose test when I was a diabetic! awa ng Dios na reverse ito by going into the vegan lifestyle meds free na for 2 and a half years.
