Immunology and Serology

My son has been to so many dermatologists in the past and none was able to help permanently heal his worsening allergy.

The big red blotches on my son’s face are itchy and inflamed. They’re worsening and I feel so helpless. I cannot accept what all the dermatologists said that there’s no cure to his condition which all of them diagnosed as asthma of the skin. I don’t buy that.
I simply cannot accept what all of them had said. They are not the best doctors.

Yesterday I brought him to Dr. Alejandro P. Ortigas, head of St Luke’s Medical Center’s Immunology and Serology Clinic. I didn’t know him from Adam. Last week, I just dialed St. Luke’s number and inquired who their number one allergy doctor is. I set an appointment and voila we’re here.

My son and I went to the hospital’s eatery area while waiting for Dr. Ortigas.

Our appointment was at 3 pm. The doctor arrived at 3 pm but there were 4 groups ahead of us so he was able to see us at 4 pm.

I told Dr. Ortigas that I don’t believe that my son has no cure. I told him we are there hoping to pinpoint the cause and hopefully he would know the right treatment for a permanent cure. I said that while holding back my tears. I just felt so frustrated.

His prescription, and my request for a blood test.

P8,643 for 3 different tests.

Disposable tourniquet- this is genius, it prevents contamination and hawa-hawa by using the traditional rubber.

They extracted 3 vials of blood.

An hour in traffic from St. Luke’s to Robinson’s Galleria.
We bought his medicines from Mercury drug, and he had a hair cut.

Cheers to mother and son

My son and I had dinner together at home. We had so much fun correcting my English pronunciation.
Son——- “Mom, stop saying Istucco, say stucco”.
I just couldn’t get it right.

Son——- “Ay naku mommy, it’s not gra pi te. It’s graffiti”.

I took up short English grammar and pronunciation classes in Oxford, UK when my son was only 2. I had British accent for a while. Ngayon, puntong Binangonan uli.

Anak, please remember to take your medicine- 2 x a day.

I went to St. Luke’s yesterday afternoon to get the blood test results.

I was anxious to find out what the results meant but the clinic was closed. I contacted Dr. Palafox and asked him to interpret it for me. I also spent an hour reading Wikipedia. Sabi na nga ba dapat nag medicine na lang ako.

We’re seeing Dr. Ortigas tomorrow at 2 pm, today na pala, to show him the results and for my son’s skin test. Tila kinse mil+ ang babayaran ko bukas.

  2. hi ms. annie. i too have suffered from skin allergies since i was a baby. i would take topical and oral meds. they would be effective but after a few weeks, the rashes would be back. finally, i tried, out of sheer desperation the aloe vera and calendula skin saver cream of zen. so far, they have worked for me, my sister and my friends. my sister had the beginnings of psoriasis, but with this cream, they have dried up. try it, skin allergies are the worst! they never go away. i have taken all sorts of allergy tests to determine what causes my allergies. i have stopped eating certain kinds of food, but for some reason, extreme cold and extreme heat bring out my rashes. good luck to your son. i’m sure with all the tests, they will find a way to avoid having the rash.

    1. Hi Cherry,

Hindi naalis yung mga skin allergies ng anak ko. Nadun pa rin. Thank you for your concern.
