TODAY is the start of the impeachment trial of Supreme Court Justice Renato Corona.
TODAY reminds me of those few weeks in October when President Joseph Estrada was being accused by Governor Chavit Singson of receiving jueteng money. Ever since the news broke-out up to the time of impeachment trial, our country stopped turning and the citizens were all glued on the television and radio. Our nation stopped functioning economically and we’re all unproductive.
Our business stood still. Who’s going to buy a new car when one is uncertain of this country’s future? From what was supposed to be a year that would help us recover our losses during the last year of President Ramos’ term because of the Asian financial crisis and the peso devaluation, our sales growth was hampered because of the political instability in our country brought about by the accusations and impeachment of President Estrada.
Our world stopped, and so did our economy.
So TODAY, I can’t help but be anxious of the scandal, grandstanding, sensationalism, exaggerated media coverage that could instigate irrational sentiments and premature public opinions. These do not help our country in any way. This inspire insurgencies. This demonstrate immaturity as a nation. This could move our economy backwards.
I do not know Justice Corona personally. As of this posting, our paths haven’t crossed. Whether he is guilty of the accusations or not, I hope the impeachment trial doesn’t turn into a nationwide carnival that would not benefit us at all.
And when everything has been said and done, let’s move on to the next best thing to do….. WORK AND BE PRODUCTIVE.
