From 168, I went to see the Missionaries of Charity in Binondo.
We stopped about 8 times asking for directions. The Missionaries of Charity’s center is smacked right in the middle of Manila’s Tondo area.
One cannot risk coming here in the evening, or you cannot get out of this place in one piece.
The illegal settlers have occupied portions of the streets on both sides.
People sleep, bathe, drink, and do their thing outside their shanties.
Some young mothers abandon their babies, some are left under the care of the nuns. But the young mothers get pregnant again.
The center is near the Sports Complex which has now become a shelter for those who lost their shanties from fire in Isla Puting Bato.
There’s a small statue of Mother Theresa outside their fence.
The babies are well taken-cared off by the nuns and their assistants.
Most of them are skin and bones when left at the center. There used to be more kids here but the DSWD transferred those that are handicapped to another center, also run by the sisters, and also somewhere in Tondo.
He is over one year old but looks small for his age. He was malnourished when left at the center. The nuns learned that the mother is currently pregnant again. She’ll most likely leave her new kid again with the nuns and go on to have se___x and get pregnant again.
Most of the nuns are of foreign origin. It’s so nice hearing the nuns speak Tagalog to the kids. “O bakit ikaw iyak”.
The nuns employ 3 assistants to help them take care of the kids. One of them dumped one drum of toys on the floor. The kids are well cared for in this place.
Sister Marieliz with a two -year old girl. She kept cdrying the whole time and pushing away the other kids. She’s kind a spoiled na from all the attention. According to the yaya, this girl was skin and bones when left at the center. Look at her, ang puti at ang taba, masungit nga lang.
I left my favorite plastic sandals in a corner near the door. When I turned, I was surprised to see this boy wearing my sandals.
I took it and placed it back near the door. After a while, eto na naman siya, he really likes my sandals.
When the nun saw him “alis alis, wag isuot”. The nun took my sandals from him and placed it near the door. Maya-maya I saw this boy again, not wearing them this time, but holding them in his arms. Girlie kaya ito pag laki.
Meet Alfred kulilit, he’s the oldest and biggest among the kids. He’s supposed to be 7 but I thought he’s only 3, kasi parang he’s also maliit for his age of 7.
He’s very charming and knows how to pose before the camera.
Sister Perla and Sister Jossel were very happy to see me, thanked me profusely and thought my presence today was an answered prayer.
Every saturday and sunday the nuns go out and conduct classes among hundreds of poor children in Tondo at the chapels and churches. They ‘ve been worrying the past week where to get enough school supplies for the kids who attend their weekend classes outside the center. Sister Jossel even went to Divisoria this morning to canvass notebooks. Sister Perla told her, let’s wait, she called and said she would come today. I did!
I had goose pimples while they were relating to me how they were worrying about the notebooks.
Their prayers were very powerful. I was in the office yesterday afernoon looking for the contact number of another missionary center mentioned to me by Alvin Romero but I couldn’t find it. I decided to look at my file of charitable organizations and I just dialled their number. I did not find them. Edmund said they found me.
Sister Perla—- Annie, please help us educate the people.
Me————– Naku Sister, we cannot solve the world’s problem. What you are asking from me is a gargantuan task. But I will help you even in my own little way.
I came home a little tired and feeling sticky because it was humid. But I was still excited and happy that I was able to help them even in my own little way. Maybe God sent me there today.
Those who wish to help the Missionaries of Charity, you may send school notebooks for Grades 1-4, ballpens, pad papers, rice, biscuits, cash, or you may volunteer your time. They’re located in 683 Delpan St., Binondo, Manila tel 242-8496. Or you may course your donations thru yours truly and I will make sure they reach the nuns. Cooked meals are also given to the street people every day except weekends. You may bring cooked food every morning. Thank you.
There are millions of people in our country living in extreme poverty. Many wander aimlessly and lose their minds from years of grumbling stomach. Classrooms and teachers will never be enough because year after year, young children will start going to school. Crime will worsen. The number of jobs available won’t be enough to employ thousands who graduate every March. No matter what the government does, poverty will continue while the population explosion remains unabated. The burden cannot be placed alone on the shoulders of private companies and individuals who work hard and do their share.
Annie I celebrated last May 22 my ten years at this company but at the same day we were sold to a bigger multi billion corporation operating in 181 airports around the globe. They don’t take over yet but I promise once I learn my future in this company I will send what I can, also I will once I get an extra income while waiting for our status with the new company. This posting moves my heart, I will just left the message in your FB once I deposited it or send thru Western Union. God Bless, Thony.
Maraming salamat Thony. You are very generous. You will make the nuns happy and would be able to help many poor people.

deo
Dear Deo,
Thank you for your message.
I am okay, thank you.
The Missionaries of Charity actually has no structure for volunteer work. They do have activities towards the holidays and what is more important would be the contributions– packed/ cooked meals, bottled water or juices for hundreds or thousands of people.
They accept bigas, canned biscuits, canned goods. During school openings, they needs school supplies for hundreds of children— notebooks, crayons, pencils, etc. Of course, cash is most welcome.
I will forward you their complete address and contact number when I get back to the office asap. My folder is under my desk.
Thank you for reading ohmybuhay.
hi annie!

sad to say, i don’t have sufficient monetary fund to donate ;-(
however, i would like to volunteer my time and help out in any way I can.
looking forward to their contact info.
thanks again, be well and God bless!
