The New York Cafe is not in Manhattan but in Budapest. This restaurant is very popular to tourists and has become a destination in itself.

History:
Commissioned by the New York Insurance Company, The New York Palace was built according to the specifications of Alajos Hauszmann, Floris Korb and Kalman Giergi. On October 23, 1894, Sandor Stever, from the famous coffee magnate family, opened the ground floor which became the most splendid part of the Italian-renaissance and baroque palace. The cafe was lavishly finished with marble, bronze, silk and velvet. The ceiling was decorated with marvelous panel paintings by Gusztav Mannheimer and Ferenc Eisenhut. The chandeliers were made of crystals from Venice.

The Cafe was closed during the First World War. It reopened but the threat of another world war coupled with a major economic crisis, New York Cafe again closed its doors and operated as the most beautiful warehouse in the world. It reopened in 1954 under the name of Hungaria.

Present
In 2001, the Italian Boscolo Group undertook reconstruction of the legendary building. In 2006 New York Cafe again welcomed its doors in all its former splendor with additional modern touches.
