Batteries and Watches

The problem with quartz watches is – when you are just keeping your watch in a box and don’t wear them often, the battery could drain and corrode the metal, including the mechanisms. That’s a big problem because it would cost a lot of money to fix it. A batteries must be replaced every one and a half years depending on the brand.

Last week my two watches pala stopped. I got worried that there’s some mechanical trouble. I was relieved they only needed new batteries.

I went to Lucerne in Shangrila and they changed the battery for P500. But for the other watch, they said there’s only one technician who does it for that particular brand, and that I should go to 6750 Ayala Avenue.

Medyo nakakailang pumunta dito, or nakakatakot kasi puro pala mamahalin na jewelry shop ang nadito. Walang tao, puro guards lang.

I looked for that battery replacement shop called Watch Check. There’s a Time check there too but there’s no karatula as to what watch brands they fix.

Watch repair is a big business pala, pag palit lang ng baterya, paglinis ng relo and repair. I saw a man in his 80s complaining to the sales clerk that the cleaning of his watch is expensive, P21,000+. But the woman said they have to change the hands. With resignation, he said “Wala kaming choice but to agree”. His request for a discount was politely turned-down.

For the same kind of battery placed in my other watch, this Watch Check charged me P1,650+. I asked why? They said that’s really the price. P500 in Shangrila, 3.1 times more expensive here. Same battery. Same company. Different location. Different technician.
