To introduce my nephew and nieces to Philippine culture and tradition, this year’s theme at our family reunion was Filipiniana.
They all cooperated and followed the recommended attire.
The Philippines is a one of a kind nation with a diverse cultural landscape shaped by centuries of Spanish influence mixed with our own indigenous cultural fusion. We are also influenced by the Americans and other Asian cultures.
Even if the new generation Tans were born in the US and are expected to grow old in America, I want them to have an appreciation for Philippine culture. No matter what, there’s still Pilipino blood running in their veins.
Honoring where your roots came from will help keep you grounded and humble.
I gave a short impromptu introduction about Philippine culture. We all sang the Philippine National Anthem, Lupang Hinirang which many refer to as Bayang Magiliw, and two of the most iconic Filipino folk songs — Bahay Kubo and Leron Leron Sinta.
Kuya Jr playfully composes a stanza with lyrics derived from where our parents’ history all began.
Bahay Kubo is one of the most the iconic Tagalog songs every Filipino must memorize even just for fun. I sang this song several times a day to lull my grandson baby Theo to sleep in the first one year of his life.
Leron Leron Sinta
My sister printed the lyrics so that everyone can follow and sing. I picked this song to honor our mother’s love for Tagalog folk songs. Growing up, I heard her sing this a few times.
