I bought some clothes from the US that were regular sized.  Meaning they’re long, not for petite women like me.

I brought the dresses  for hemline  adjustments  to a modista just ’round the corner from the dentist’s clinic.

Button-looking canisters.

The one wearing pink was the assistant modista.  She was the one who asked me “Mam, pwedeng magtanong?”  But before I could even grant her permission to say something,  she continued “Buntis kayo?”.   (Are you pregnant?)

My sensitive feelings would not have been shattered had she added “First baby nyo?”

——–

There’s a Monterey shop next door.

Me-      Miss,  masarap ba itong sisig?    (Does this taste good?)

She-     Depende. (It depends)

Me-     (huh?)

Me again –    Masarap ba ito?

She-   Eh depende nga.

Me again (I scratched my neck)-   Natikman mo na ba ito?  Masarap ba?

She-  Depende sa inyo yun kung anong gagawin nyo.

Me (Senyora, pardon,  I was in the  toilet when God sprinkled the earth with patience)

Me again-  Ang tanong ko kung masarap,  kung natikman mo na,  hindi kung anong gusto kong luto,  masarap ba or masama ang lasa?

She-  Eh nasa sa inyo nga yun kung ipri-prito o  i- ganun sa pan….

Me  (cool Annie,  breathe, breathe slowly,  and leave, now na!)

  1. I wish more people would write sites like this that are actually fun to read. With all the fluff floating around on the net, it is refreshing to read a site like yours instead.

  2. Nice commentary. Last Month I stumbled onto this site and wanted to let you know that I’ve been gratified, going through your websites posts. I will probably be signing as much as your blogs feed and will wait for your next post.
